Window Trim
November 06
The windows and doors are trimmed with dead aspens. This image was taken before I had completed the trim underneath the window sills.
I harvested the trees using a folding buck saw from Lee Valley Tools. You can see it hanging on the wall to the left of the windows.
Using a Delta 28-276, 14" bandsaw, I made a long cut along the backside of the trim piece, to create a flat surface.. The blade is important. I used a Highland Woodworking "Wood Slicer." It is described as a " super sharp thin-kerf precision resawing blade."
I finished the ends with a belt sander. The wood has no varnish or wood treament. The logs had no bark when harvested and their surfaces are very beautiful.

I chose each one of the trees carefully, looking for large areas of the bone color. Each log has been trimmed to make a flat backside. The ends have been sanded, and the edge rounded to give it a soft finish.

John at Work
I am trimming a log that will be fit between the window and a trim log.

|
Window Detail
Between the window and the log I inset more apsens, which were trimmed on three sides to fit.

Detail
Choosing and placing the logs requires lots of decisions. Flaws in an otherwise smooth, bone-colored log can become satisfying detail when isolated by the cut of the lintel.
|

|
Detail
The logs are not at all straight. One has to judge which is the side that will become the flat (wall) side, and how the curves on the other side will work in pracital relation to the wall and aesthetc relation to the room.

Sills
The sills are made of scrap fir 2x6, scavenged from my city neighborhood's construction dumpsters. (Many houses there are brick bungalows which are being "topped" with second stories.) I sanded and shaped the wood, then varnished it.
Beneath the sills are planks of aspen, cut on three sides. The lower edge is the natural exterior of the log. The boards are then varnished.
Between each of the three sub-sill trim boards are blocks of aspen which have been painted red.

Window Handle Cuts
To accomodate the window handles, I carved out the sill, using my hand adze, belt sander, and sand paper.

Small Windows
The lintels on the two small lake-side windows have a slight upward curve.

The Closet Door
Digital designing
This photo of the closet door shows real aspen trim. But the trim and paint on the door is digitally added. Once I get the kitchen cabinets done, I plan to start adding paint and wood to the doors.
