License Plate Art of John Boak
|
John Boak has used license plates as a substrate for paintings since the eighties. He has said that the visual complexity that the numbers add to the surface is also symbolic of the layers of data that underpin contemporary life.
His license-plate paintings have been executed in both acrylic and oil. He paints individual plates while working on other paintings; it gives him a way to use up excess paint mixed for other paintings.
