Inside The Cabin

The Main Room

Light on Wood

The walls are made of 1"x12" rough-cut spruce from Hester's Sawmill in Kremmling, Colorado.

The windows are framed in logs. The source trees were standing dead aspens, harvested from our development. They have no bark on them. The color and markings are natural. I did no sanding or finishing.

The floor is prefinished oak. I installed it over two weekends.

The wood stove is made of cast iron and soap-stone

The Main Room

There is a small closet at the head of the stairs. The kitchen is behind the closet and the stairwell wall.

The sculpture on the closet wall is by John Boak, "Grid Iron", (28"x19", acrylic on wood & iron, 2004).

The painting in the stairwell is by John Boak, "Return", (Acrylic on Linen, 48""x36", 1986).

Stairwell and Entry Area

A railing of aspen is made using a tenon cutter. The hand rail down the stairs is a skinny pine from the back yard. The oak cabinet was recycled from a Connecticut brass factory in the late fifties. It held my father's tools and hardware until the eighties. Then he cleaned it up, varnished it and moved it into his den. This year it moved to Colorado, where it again holds tools and hardware.

The mirror, which holds work gloves in a group of bins, was found in the dumpster in my alley in the city.

That pole against the back wall is just an aspen waiting to be used.

The Kitchen

Twig and log

I'm still working on these cabinets. Their structure is aspen logs. The twig work is made of miscellaneous woods, gathered on numerous hikes. It includes a variety of pine branches, but also some delightful beige willow twigs from the canyonlands of Utah. The doors are made from recycled industrial palettes.

Stairwell

Tree Fill

The stairs have a landing. The space between the stairs is filled with whole aspens. The red balls are part of a system of painted sculptural trim throughout the cabin.

East Bedroom

Logmania

This room is very cosy. The big windows view Mount Elbert. The little window faces southeast. I cut a lot of dead aspens to make these 36" long log tiles.

Door Trim

Doors and windows are trimmed with aspen logs.
